front end crash - what now?

2004 Hyundai Accent
1.6L I-4 DOHC
60,000 mi

I was involved in a head-on collision in this accent. I didn't have collision insurance for it. The body shop here in my small town is quoting $5g+ for the repairs, and that's more than the car is worth.
The engine is still running and I can move the car around the driveway no problem. The airbags remain undeployed (there was a fault with the wiring from previous owner). I can't get the hood up to check underneath, but as I said it is still running.
I have no mechanical knowledge/experience with cars. I am stuck in a small town with privately owned garages which are accustomed to ripping off rich tourists. What should I do with this accent?

Who was at fault in the accident? This will carry the weight as to which company pays. If it was not your fault, the other insurance should pay for repairs or pay ypou for a totalled car. If it is your fault, diifferent story.

The fault is kind of up in the air. We were both in the center turning lane. He entered it too soon, but I was also passing through it carelessly as a I crossed the traffic, and we met head-on. I've filed with his insurance, but they're waiting for the police report. I highly doubt that I'll get any money out of them  .
So what should I do with the car? Sell it on Ebay for parts? Hire a student to replace the body parts, and check the engine? It's sitting in my garage right now, but there's snow here and I'd like to move our other vehicle in soon.

As of now, you need to wait on the other insurance. Do you have no fault insurance in your state? If so, your insurance should pay for it also. Might raise your rates tho. I sorta would wait just a while, or buy a large tarp and cover the wrecked one and move the other in the garage.

apparently we do have no-fault in NY, but i didn't have collision coverage in my policy. i'm reading about it now, but do you know offhand if it the damage is covered regardless?

Not sure about your state. You need to contact someone that would know. If you want, you can call anothwer insurance company and just ask them a "hypothetical" question. You may get the answer.

alright, it's been determined that i won't be getting any compensation for the accident.
so the question remains what should i do with the car?
to start, what kind of tool should i be using to free the hood up and at least get it open?

Just look at the latch assembly and see what you might think you need to use to pry the hood open. You night be able to pull the hood release and have another pry or move the latch to get it open.
