front axle clicking thru turns Sign In

Hello! New to the forum, hope you can help! I just had new McPherson struts & mounts installed on my 2000 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport wagon with awd & abs. Now when I make left OR right turns I sometimes get this clicking. I had the front axle shafts replaced about 5 years ago, & NOT with OEM parts, so I'm thinking they need replacement again. I can get Cardone reman shafts online for $60.00 per side, & was thinking about putting them on myself to save some money. I do have some mechanical ability, but I understand you have to transfer a stub shaft from the old to the new part. Is this doable by a shadetree mechanic such as myself, or should I just take the parts to my mechanic & let him put them on? What, if any special tools are required, as I don't have them? Thanx for your help, JD

you'll need jack, stand(s), sockets, axle nut socket, punch, pry bar, hammer.

Depending on the setup you can disconnect the strut, remove axle nut (and replace), use punch and hammer to push axle back, turn wheel to one side and pull the axle out of hub use pry bar between axle and transmission.

Now some axles can come out with very little effort some really suck to get out don't pry to hard as you may damage the case. If it dosen't come out you'll need to get your hands on a slide hammer with CV axle remover tool (see picture).

**note if you can't remove the axle from the hub side you may need to separate the lower ball joint too.**

OK, maybe I can borrow that slap hammer from Autozone, like they'll let you borrow McPherson strut spring compressors, etc., but you didn't say anything about transferring the stub shaft, so is it a simple slip off & slide on from the old part to the new, or what? JD

Re: front axle clicking thru turns Sign In

if your replaceing the whole shaft just simple as pushing the new one in untill it clicks/ goes in all the way. If your replacing CV joint remove the boot clamp, boot, use a punch and push the old joint off the shaft held in with spring clip, clean, install new boot, new joint, new bands use all the grease that comes with the boot.

you will need a vise to secure the axle while you work on it if your repairing the old axle.

Install the rest in reverse procedure, torque new axle nut to specification, Also make note of which way the strut bolts go in if they are sticking out the wrong way it may rub on components like flex hose and abs sensor wire.

Really appreciate the guidance. I have a vise in my tool room, but I'll just be R&Ring. I think Cardone requires you send them back the old core so they can rebuild it, tho I don't know if they'd want an aftermarket part as a core. I understand they only reman OEM cores.Have to find a torque wrench, tho. I guess the replacement nuts'll be a dealer item, but I'll check the parts stores first. Thanx, JD

often the nut will come with new/reman axle check first before buying a new nut.
