feeling shimmy after hitting bump Sign In

2003 chevy 3500 express cutaway. 150,000k miles

I feel the front wheels shimmy after hitting a bump in the road. I felt it before I had tires rotated thinking that maybe they were not balanced properly but still doing it. Just had alignment but still doing it. Thanks in advance for any help.John

It depends at what speeds this is happening. An alignment won't cause a shimmy.

Did they rebalance the tires for you when they were rotated? That is probably the 1st thing I would check.

An out of balance tire will typically start vibrating around 45mph and smooth out above 60mph

At 150,000 Mi. the suspension is getting tired. Could be any number of thing because "shimmy" is hard to visualize. Do you feel it in the front end or the rear? Either way, here are some possible culprits: Struts, ball joints, wheel barings, bushings... etc. The way I would diagnose it if you don't want to take it to a garage is to put it on a lift, and visually inspect the suspension, and see if you can shake it. If anything wiggles that's an indicator.
