You need to begin with a known tested good battery fully charged. Boost starts are only as good as the cables and connections. A radically dead battery will suck up most of the power. Jumper boxes are safer for this that boosts from another vehicle.

Jumper cables vary wildly in quality. Serious ones probably exceed $200 bucks. Serious jumper box probably now about $300. The rest is all marginal as plain copper is expensive.

Careful with this as you can cause problems you didn't begin with,

Tried to start it this morning and it started, went to get a coffee and when I went to start it again same thing would not start, just a weird sound no clicking or anything, then everything went dead and that was after it started and driving it a few miles.

So it want you to "goose" chase where it does this. If absolutely not at the battery then the other ends of same cables. Power is only like a chain, as strong as the weakest link.

General: Neg cable goes on to engine block. Pos cable may split up right near battery and largest gauge wire on to solenoid on starter motor. Usually this would be too new for this but can still happen. Do not allow a tool touching batter positive anything to touch grounded anything. Basic rule is disconnect negative battery cable or both but neg off first back on last. Know any security procedures for assorted things or use a memory saver -- another story,

Got better jumper cables and got van going, notice lights are flickering on dash and outside park lights maybe an alternator? when I give it gas it flickers more. And thanks for the help so far.

Ya - used to use two cheap sets of cables back when but can't with GM side posts. Not the point. Alternators can do funky things. Should be internally regulated with a diode trio, windings, brushes da-de-dah.

They can short, can overcharge, undercharge or no charge, sound like a bearing is a problem and so on.

Check voltage, just plain voltage, engine off and engine running for fluctuations

Norms only vary a bit......

Off, good battery fully charged about 12.2v or so

Just started a bit over 14v then usually drops to mid to high 13's.

While cranking shouldn't really drop below say 9.5V with a quick voltmeter or some testing needed.

Note: Side posts the bolt is direct to battery and the washer end of cable is relying on good contact or battery is not giving best info or transferring full ability,
