I had my ford ka 2004 reg, 1.3 engine, 23000 mileage, serviced and M O T last tuesday. The next morning (wednesday) i looked under the bonnet and found that my engine coolant was still below the minimum line, so i went back to the garage and explained they hadn't topped it up. They checked it for me said there is no leaks and claimed that its now at the right level, somehow ? without having to top it up he showed me and it was at maximum level. This morning 5 days later its back down to under minimum ? any idea why and should i be concerned?

Coolant expands and contracts. That's why you have a minimum and a maximum. It needs to be above minimum when the engine is cold. It will rise as the engine gets hotter.

Thanks for your very useful advise it gave me armour to go back to the garage and tell them that it needed topping up they allowed an hour for engine to cool down then realized i was right about the level being low. Them being mechanics, you would think they would know that engine needed to be cool in order to get the correct level.

Is there any real difference in the different types of ant freeze on the market?

I will answer this but in the future start a new question for a different vehicle.

The old green coolant is a 2 year coolant. The newer coolants like Dexcool and other "extended life" coolants are free of any silicates which are harmful to the cooling system. You can anything to green coolant and still have the equilivent of green coolant but for it to remain extended life, it can't be contaminated with any regular coolant.
