The rod that goes between the handle and the latch assembly may have just popped off? I know you say that you can still feel the spring tension on the handle but it was very common for the arm that the rod connects too; to break off . If that’s the case you’ll need to replace the handle; there’s usually no repair for it. Dan. It’s held on mostly by pop in/pop out clips, a few (sometimes partially hidden) screws and common sense; the latter I can’t help you with. LOL But it’s not brain surgery; just take your time, don’t get rough with it and you’ll get it off. Dan.
