I get the splines on the shaft started and then rotate the shaft while pushing or "popping" the shaft gently. You can feel the shaft "bottom out" every time you give it a shovel.... The snap ring has to get into a good spot and then with a little popping force the shaft will go into place... You just have to becareful not to bend the snap ring.
