2000 dodge ram 1500 van shuts off while driving. Will not start but after a couple to as much as 45 min later it will start. I can go for a few min or a few miles it will shut down again. I had a mechanic diagnose and replace the idle air control valve but did not fix the issue. Im not sure if it is related but the vehicle seems hot and outside air temp is up when this happens

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

The mechanic has determined that within the seconds after it quits the fuel pump is not running but before he can find the problem it seems to fix itself and fuel pump runs. Again possibly heat related and as it cools it works!

OK. That means you have narrowed things down considerably and now you need to find out why. What you have to do now is rig something up so you can monitor the power feed to the pump so you can know right away if the power supply has interrupted out or not.

I can't tell you what the problem is. I'm not there. All I can do is tell you how to find the problem which if he has the van, is pointless anyway.

I think his biggest issue is that it is so random and might take several mins or hours before it occurs and by the time it occurs and he can get to it it has done cooled down enough that it now works. But like you said there is nothing you or I can do as long as he has it. Its just beyond me and im tryin to find out if anyone has had similar issues and what the fix was or maybe help come up with sugestions

Intermittant issues is something that we deal with every day and there are ways he can be on "standby" so when it does goes, he has an answer right away.

Tell him he has your ok to use it for a shop runner. If he does that he will be driving it. Like HT said he would want to rig up something to monitor the voltage at the pump so when it quits he will then know if the electrical supply is the issue or the pump itself.
