cracked flywheel Sign In

I put a flywheel in a 2003 chevy express van 4 mos. ago because the center arround the crank was cracked......I happened againFrownFrownFrown.I checked for t.s.b.'s and found nothing. The trans.and 6.0L engine are original with 123k .I haven't seen this since the 80's and I'm still not 100% sure why it cracked again so soon. The trans. looks to be mounted straight as far as i can tell.Could this be a problem with the torque converter ? Ballooning ? I'd like to pinpoint the cause before changing it again.Has anyone seen this recently? Thanx in advance , Dr. Dale Cool

Did you replace the spacer as well when you did the flexplate? Gm did have issues with these and part # 12563532 spacer is to be replaced with a new flexplate because of this reason of them cracking.

Re: cracked flywheel Sign In

it doesns't show a TSB # or anything, but when i worked at the dealer we had this problem quite often and we were told to use the spacer to fix the issue.

Hey intimadatorsquizz ! I totaly trust what you are saying....But I still have a hard time understanding what the spacer has to do with the repeated cracking of the flywheel ? Is it because the spacer was never installed from the factory?I'm not sure if it had one at this point ! is that possible ? or is the factory spacer defective in machine tolerance?........ In my 32 years as a general auto tech. I in almost all cases go with o.e. replacement parts as well as follow the recommended procedures for the repair i.e torque sequence, loctite etc.etc.......Thanx for any input , Dale

Re: cracked flywheel Sign In

the spacer i believe reinforces where it bolts to the crankshaft. it's a pretty thick piece and like i said i used to sell these and for the people that didn't put it in would break the new flexplate after a short while.
