coolant leak 92 dodge shadow
|

|
i just got a 92 dodge shadow and it's leaking coolant.
i fill the coolant reservoir and the next day it's empty again.
i don't see any drips from it while its parked, so i'm guessing it only leaks when the engine is running and the car is moving.
does anybody have any ideas on how to go about finding and fixing the leak, or what might be causing the coolant loss?
any help or suggestions appreciated.

Pressure test the cooling system with a cooling system pressure tester.

i don't have a cooling system pressure tester.
is there a way to figure out what's what without one?

Your only other method would be this

So, if it was hooked up to a pressure tester and the presence of a leak was revealed - then what?
I already know there's a leak - the coolant level drops an inch every time I drive 4km to the store and back.
I guess the real question is - how to stop it?
Assuming there is in fact a leak - how would you find and fix it?

Duh, you repair whatever is leaking. Find out what it is before you start asking how to fix it.

Duh - how do you find out what's leaking if you can't see where the coolant is coming from?

You need to take this to a shop for repair. You just don't have enough brains to repair this.

The pressure tester is used to pressurize the coolant system. If there are any leaks that happen when there is pressure in the system, you should be able to visually see them. You'll probably have to get under the vehicle. Pay attention to where hoses connect, water pump, freeze plugs, and around the radiator. Those are where leaks are most prominent.
Read the instructions that come with the tester, so you know how to operate it without over pressurizing the system. Best to test when the engine is cold. Some testers also come with an adapter to check the radiator cap. A faulty cap can cause the system to not become pressurized when the engine is running.
Refrain from using any chemicals or stop leaks in the system to stop leaks. Most of the chemicals cause more damage than they solve. Once you determine where your leak is, you should be able to know what needs to be replaced or resealed to fix the leak.
