cold engine start clicking noise, what is it? Sign In

I replaced my fuel filter on my 2003 2.4L toyota tacoma 2wd. 65k miles. At the same
time I checked the valves. No valve adjustment needed. Now I hear 4 to 6 rapid
metallic clicks when i start the engine cold. Once it happened when it was warm.

This fuel filter is not original equipment.

ideas?

tks,

Did the clicks start happening right after you replaced your fuel filter? Do the clicks occur after the engine has started or do they happen before the starter engages?

Where do the clicks sound like they are coming from on the engine? might need someone to start the engine while your ear is under the hood.

yes that is why i mentioned the work done.

This reply page does not let me see my original post while I reply.

Engine compartment is pretty broad. Can you isolate the source of the noise inside the engine compartment?

When you checked the valves, did you remove anything such as the valve cover? Was the reason you checked the valves because you heard the noise after replacing the filter?

True - once you are in "reply" mode you can't look back more than the post right before the new one at this format of forum.
Not sure how a fuel filter OE or whatever you did is the cause of clicking unless it's rubbing something somehow?
Your post suggests this noise goes right away and almost only on a cold start - right?
Begs the question what did you do to determine valves didn't need adjusting? I didn't look it up but can't think of much that requires periodic checking of valve lash or adjustment so did you find out after taking it apart? That's more likely to make some error and cause a problem than a fuel filter unless really hacked in there with something non OE if that means a whole different type of filter or just a replacement that wasn't from the vehicle maker?
Reading between the lines it didn't have any noise until you did this so I'd go back and check what you messed with or took apart that it's all back properly,

valves require periodic adjustment. At 15k one needed to be adjusted. Adjustment by replacing valve shim. Checked again at 65k and none needed adjustment. The FF requires no periodic replacement according to toyota, but then neither does the trany, diff, brake and clutch fluid. I prefer to replace fluids. I decided to replace the FF too. I dont know that either of these causes the clicking and I kinda doubt it. Especially the valves. however, I mention becasue it started right after I did those two preventative maintenance items.

4 to 6 very rapid clicks ticking 1 to 2 seconds. then it stops.

what i did to determine that the valves did not need adjustment, is I checked them with a feeler gauge. i cant imagine any other way. And yes I did turn the engine over so each cam lobe in turn was pointing up.

filter was listed in the parts store book as for this vehicle engine.

Valve cover is tight. All the bolts holding the FF are tight.

If you have excessive valve lash, the ticking noise would stay regardless. 15K valve lash check and adjustment it really an overkill on something like that. I believe the only time a lash adjustment would be needed if it was at a much higher mileage, manufacture recommends 60K intervals, or you had to service the cylinder head for some reason. When the valve seats wear on those, the lash gets tighter. They want to make sure there is enough lash, but not enough to cause noise, so the valves seat properly.

I don't see any tech bulletins on engine noises on cold start. Still would be nice if you could isolate the location of the noise.

Cold weather and too thick of an oil could cause noises during start. Are you using a factory oil filter? During start up and the oil is thick, the bypass valve will open up in the filter, so unfiltered oil makes it way through the engine. Oil that is cold and thicker can make the chain rattle before the chain tensioner has a time to react or the lash to be excessive in the valve train until the lifter buckets fill up.

Arggh! 1-2 seconds isn't much time to isolate a noise.

Again I suggest if this happened from just checking valve lash which this time I looked was a bit involved and could be wrong but requires draining engine coolant? OK - did any get on any belts?

Thinking outside the box that if a belt was wet with coolant it just might make a noise but would figure it would go away after a run but maybe not?

Plain accessory belt(s) can make noise, some normal some not. IDK - if that silly it should shut up if you spray it with just water before start up when you are sure you would hear this noise.

If that makes noise go away just once and comes back (it would) then I'd think about cleaning the belt or replacing it/them.

I did find the list of things to do by miles and a bit surprised at the job it is to check valve lifter clearance as in general I would think you would hear one or more out of spec first then go check?

Other proactive things you listed I would normally suggest but shame on me don't do all that on even my own and keep vehicles for ages and ages my own. I do look for assorted leaks and check levels but for gear cases not very often unless something seen.

So, back to this noise that's gone so fast not sure what to suggest as noise would be gone before you could isolate it?????????

ok that did not work. I replied with quote, but i see it took the quote, but not my reply. Here was my reply:

Ive never drained coolant to check valve clearance. Just remove the valve cover.

I never heard of that. Just waiting until a valve sounded out of spec before checking. I think all vehicles i ever owned listed a mileage/months frequency for checking clearance...with a feeler gauge.

I don't know what vehicles you have owned in the past but the only valves that need adjusting are solid lifter setups and 95% of the cars out there have hydraulic lifters now and don't require anything beyond initial setup.

Please stop using the quote feature. It doesn't work very well and it's messing up all your responses. I deleted the last one as nothing new was in it.

If you just stop using the quote button, you won't have a problem.

ok. 3 times retyping all my thread reply text and it does not work, then it does take my post when I just complain about the site failing. Wast of time!

If you can't handle posting on the site, you surely aren't going to be able to fix your vehicle.

Re: cold engine start clicking noise, what is it? Sign In

Sorry for site problems - there are many and different views depending on the device and server you are using. All is "cashed" while you type and if a "reply" only is used on a post that doesn't exist it will toss it out. Been here since 2002 and I can't use the "quote" button so spell it out if needed. If I do it will post in small print in reply to and everything I typed will be in the wrong place so it's not just you. I delete my own if that happens or never use the quote button.
Other is open two windows and keep refreshing one to see if the thread has already been touched which is a real pest.

Back to the problem: I did find a marginally trustworthy copy of AllDataDIY on this engine which does state checking adjusting so called lifters with shims of assorted sized and also said in procedures to get that far coolant was to be drained so that was wrong info listed for your exact engine?
Incorrect info out there if only parts #s and more doesn't get corrected so stays forever and I can't know if it correct or not. Said you use a micrometer to measure thickness of old shim you are replacing to get "lash" into spec like stacking worn pennies or something. Sucky design IMO and a huge car maker like Toyota should have just used hydraulic lifters and end this bullcrap.
Seems to me your trouble began with touching it at all. So much over torqueing(that word is spelling incorrectly and my computer will NOT let me spell that properly!) valve cover might have thrown off the real gap you were trying to fix or remove that you at least thought was off?
Again: This is so quick that you hear anything you may only know by going back and checking all you did again.

You are being a good egg doing services and maintenance we would suggest folks do to the letter and it seems to have messed you up. Info on this plain stinks, doesn't list exact tools needed nor other checks and services to do by miles and lists no time intervals.
Any decent paper owner's manual should list it out by time and miles and toss the computer/devices out. They are messing you up in this case IMO,

Tom
