cavalier front bumper snubbed up, headlights up in air Sign In

I've looked everywhere for a thread that solves this problem but I think it is not that common. First of all my 2001 Cavalier has a bumper that had been repaired and welded (not bolted) back on before I bought it. I rear ended somebody going about 5 MPH and now the bumper is "snubbed up." It doesn't look bad just got pushed up a little bit.

This wouldn't bother me only except that my headlight now are up in the air too high. People are constantly flashing me thinking I have my brights on and when I drive on the interstate my lights shine on the signs above the road or in the trees. I tried adjusting the lights and they wouldn't get low enough. Then I purchased to new headlight assemblies and installed them thinking they might adjust better... no luck. Once I adjust them so far down they pop back up because the bumper won't let them adjust down any further.

The only thing I can think to do is somehow get that bumper back down. Only one problem... it is welded on, not bolted. Any ideas on how to get that bumper hammered down?

I thought about either taking the bumper shield off and hitting it with a sledgehammer with a 2x4 in between, or tying a chain around it and then to a tree stump and backing up slowly hoping it will pull the bumper down. Please has anyone had this problem or have a good idea to help me???

Short of a re-weld, all I can think of right now is a 4x4 under the frame befind the bumper, then another on top where it needs bent back. A couple of bottle jacks on the top of the bumper to push it back down-however I am not thinking of the framework needed on top of the bumper for the bottle jacks to push against. Requires some thought on your part as we cannot see the project. Good luck.
