car stalls when idle / or accelerate

hi
I´m new to this forum . I have a 1987 toyota celica with 140k miles, i just got it from my dad . it was sitting in his garage so i told him to sell it to me . now the car is giving me problems , I have to give it gas to start the car then i have to let it war up but now for some reason it stalls when idle and if i give it a little bit of gas the engine dies .if i give it a lot of gas it does not stall . so im not sure why that happens . i have notice that when i turn it on smells like gas on the outside . this car has a carburetor and I read that since the car has been with out use for so long i need to clean the carburator ,change the gas filters etc. i dont know that much about cars the only thin i want to know is if this is a serius problem _ or is it easy to solve? and if so how to solve the problem?
