car damage - is this serious? Sign In

Today, while travelling at about 3mph, I crashed the side of my new Audi A4 into a concrete pole.

This is the damaged side:

-- note the plastic thing which got pushed out from its usual holding place by the force of the impact

Compared to the undamaged side:

Now, I am not too concerned at all about the cosmetic damage, but was wondering if I could ask any OMNI car gurus out there about any possible safety implications.

We bought the Audi A4 primarily because of the the safety ratings. We're worried that maybe there might be sensitive electronics that might have been located there, or else that rust could form on the inside of the car due to the cracks there, or that the stuctural integrity of the metal may be compromised.

Given that I'm not concerned about cosmetic damage (only concerend about safety), am I making a mountain out of a molehill here, or should I really be worried and get it fixed asap?

Although you do have a few dollars there in cosmetic damage, you haven't hurt it structurally or electronically. Most of those marks will buff out although i'm sure it will take paint to get it perfect. The popped out part is where the rubber bumper cover attaches to the fender and it just needs to be reattached.

Thank you. The rubber bit which needs to be reattached - is that a safety-related concern, and if so, should I get it urgently taken care of?

Thank you in advance.

No, it's not a big deal as long as it's not flapping in the breeze and making it worse.
