battery power Sign In

The last few days I have noticed my battery charge on the tachometer has been dropping below normal. It mainly drops below normal when I use my headlights. I took my battery in to get checked and they told me that there is nothing wrong with my battery. I figure there is some short somewhere. How do I go about checking it myself without taking it to a mechanic? Does anyone have any advice? Thanks.

Re: battery power Sign In

It could be a charging system issue, possibly the alternator? The first test would be to connect a voltmeter across the battery terminals. Take a reading while the vehicle is off; then start the vehicle and take a second reading. You should see a two to three volt increase with the engine running. A properly functioning charging system with the vehicle running should be somewhere between 13.5 to 14.5 volts.
You haven’t told us year, make and model; we’ll need to know that to help with any other test procedures.
Not all charging systems are created equally.Wink
