automechanic replaced transmission with that of another brand Sign In

1999 toyota camry 4 cylinder 200000 miles

i got my transmission replaced by an asian automechanic through a friend's referral , afterwards the speedometer as well as the acceleration was erratic ... they inputed some kind of a diagnostic sensor and it read that the problem was the speed sensor .

i went to another mechanic for a second opinion and he said that the transmission was leaking oil and that the transmission itself wasn't even that of a toyota brand ... at this time i;m not quite certain if he's the one telling the truth .

i got the original mechanic to give me a manufacturers warranty , however , i would rather not pay addition bucks for labor for replacing this transmission once again ... isn't there a law against such mal-practice , how can i make sure that these people get the punishment that they deserve ?

Whoa there! Might be time to step back and regroup? Aisan mechanic working on an Asian vehicle? How odd! If you have a leak, take it back to the shop and have them recheck it. Sounds like a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) problem. I seriously doubt that he put a Ford or Chevrolet transmission in your car. It is just human nature for one to be treated as one is Being treated. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Give them the chance to make it right before calling them names. You'll get nowhere doing that. Auto mechanics are actually real human beings. We eat and put our pants on the same way as you do. Believe it or not, we have wives and families, too. Give him a break. Anymore 'name calling' or racial comments will not be tolerated. So, chill.Wink

Car companies frequently farm out components to outside concerns so it may be the correct transmission. Can't say for sure as you didn't even state if this is a standard or automatic. If there is/was trouble right away why didn't you go back to the place/person who installed it OR rebuilt the original? You shouldn't have to buy a warranty if it didn't work from the get go. An extended warranty would be something different,

it's an automatic and i did address the problem to the mechsanic as soon as the problem was noticed - speedometer asnd acceleration was erratic - they did a diagnostic on the car and an error pertaining to the speed sensor popped up , i had the speed sensor replaced by them with a used one ... the situation got much better but the occurences still happen later on . i went to another mechanic and he claims that the transmission is of another car brand and not toyota's. i'm going to go to a toyotsa dealer to authenticate this but what i need help for on this forum is on the proper route of prosecuting these people for such unacceptable practices - should this be the case.

Well said Loren!

gcttutor: Give the guy/place a chance. Car repair can be real pill and doesn't always behave right, we get cut, burnt, inhale who knows what, smell like crap from a days work and an angry customer when and if you did your best isn't taken well,

gcttutor; Again, it is hard for me to believe that they put in a transmission other than that type of vehicle. Other types wouldn't even bolt up. Again, attitude, attitude, attitude. You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. The problem needs to be sensibly diagnosed. If the tranny shop screwed up, which I doubt, give them the chance to make it right. You may have a secondary issue going on that wasn't addressed originally. Sue happy people turn me off. Very quickly. I won't give them the time of day. Keep that in mind when you are trying to get to the bottom of this. In 26 years in business, I've never been sued. And, I won't accept a new customer with that 'frame' of mind. I can tell, just by talking with them. As I said before, you need to 'step back', regroup, take a deep breath, and start from the beginning. Mechanics aren't perfect. We make mistakes. It is possible that the trans. shop made a mistake. It's possible. From what I've read, it doesn't sound like it. I'm sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear, but... Toyotas' don't commonly have VSS problems, but using a used one isn't a chisled in stone answer.
Probably said more than I should have....
