1998 Ford Windstar
3.0 v6
155,000 miles

I am stumped.
I am working on a 1998 Windstar with the 3.0 engine. The cooling system was deteriorating the past year or two--lots of rust in the system. I flushed and flushed and flushed, but it always came back. It was very rusty, but there was no cooling issues. it always ran in the proper temp range. Last month I replaced the radiator, the hoses, the thermostat. Now I am having widely fluctuating temperatures that do not seem to have a consistent pattern. Sometimes when you first run the car, it will be perfect, no temp spikes at all. Untill you stop for a few minutes and then drive again, then the temp spike up to 3/4 the gauge and will fall once you have freeway speed. Other times it is the opposite. In any case, I cannot figure what is happening. The air cionditioning will stop cooling well when the car begins to heat up, but will return to cooling when the car cools down.

I have re replaced the thermostat. I have bled the cooling system--three times. The only component I did not replace was the water pump, but it seems to be working fine--no leaks and looks to be moving water well through the system.

Ideas???

Some of those 3.0s had issues with the water pump impellers rotting off.
