3.3L overheating problem

3.3L overheating problem Sign In

2002 dodge caravan. The wife went to the city and had no problems. While in the city she called said van is overheating. long story short.... giving the van time to cool down, she was able to get on the highway and had no problems with heat, and made the 2 hour trip. I took out the thermostat thinking it was stuck. drove around town and yep heat gauge started to climb up to the red. while it was running and getting warm again i did notice that the fans would not turn on. Also engine light was on. Got a buddy over with a code reader and it said it was the fan relay module. So order and replaced the module, and then got the van heated up again and no luck. The fans still would not come on. thinking it was the fans pulled one out and wired it onto a battery and away it went (so not the fans). So I'm running out of ideas. If anyone else has any other ideas that i have not thought of please let me know.

PS: I did notice one thing as well and that, what i think is the computer, was making a really high pitch noise after i turned the van off?

What is the trouble code number?

the guy that got the trouble code number did not tell me what the number was just told me what was wrong? :(

You need to stop with the old school mentality. Put the thermostat back in and if you still have the fan "hot wired", remove that. You cannot run a car without a thermostat.

ok shall do that, did not think it played that big of a role in getting the fans to turn on.

It does.., If the engine is getting over cooled the ECT sensor will not know to turn the fans on.

The fans aren't the issue with the thermostat. It is very critical to engine management and fuel mixture. You can't just remove one.

ok thanx for the help when i get time to put it back in i'll take it for a run, then update everyone if it helped fix the problem. One thing i did not mention was that i took the rad cap off and noticed that the fluid was moving. Was told that if it was then it was not the water pump.

Ok i put the thermostat back in and also put the fan back in. Ran the van for 1/2 hour and yes the temp gauge came up above normal. The fans still would not come on. Thanx for the info but i am going to take it to the dodge dealer to find out what is going on. i'll post what was wrong so that if this happens to someone else. :(

That's probably a good idea. Be aware that these fans are not programmed to come on at what you would think is normal. Most of them aren't programmed to come on before 225 or higher.
