X5, tires first or CV Boots? Sign In

Hello,

2004
BMW
X5
3.0
130K

I was told by the dealer to replace my front right CV Boot as it has cracked. My tires are also pretty worn out and need replacement. I get tires done at a local shop and the CV Boot with a different mechanic. Should I replace the CV Boot before changing the tires or is it best to change the four tires and then replace the CV Boot?

Me again and sorry for limited specifics for these cars.

This is AWD = all wheel drive? OK - tires being of even wear will be critical both for handling controls and braking controls do not do well if one is part worn as it's travelling a different distance being less than others.

CV boots usually mean you will get an entire rebuilt shaft with new boots. If one side or wheel has a problem now if not trauma or cut for some reason others may be coming along soon - your call on who is checking in person with what they suggest.

Do check that if where you want to buy tires can also tend to setting tire pressure monitoring as well.

You asked which is more important and the answer is that it all is,

Thanks a lot for your response Tom,

Both are absolutely critical; my question was whether I should change my tires First or do the CV Boot replacement and then take it to a my local tire shop for new tires. If, for instance, balancing or an alignment is done following the replacement of tires, would changing the CV Boots afterwards require re-alignment? If so, I guess it's best to change the CV Boots first.

My question is not really which one has priority over the other but rather which one should be performed first.

Thanks again

I would do tires first and make sure you get what is right for the car. Then take on the CV boot(s) as you suggested that would be at a dealer who could also reset or reacquaint anything that in doing anything set off a warning you might just need them for.

These and some others you will need the dealers. In changing just boots for a CV joint if they will do just that it probably can't be done without removing whole shaft and may set off a warning that there was a disruption of info from the shaft with a sensor for speed perhaps and need resetting that it's fine again. Near certain you can't do or remove a CV jointed axle/shaft without also requiring an alignment as parts moved to do that about certainly are alignment involved. Find out up front.

You said boot was cracked suggesting wear and tear w some age. That's why I suggest all boots be checked as well so this isn't a constant visit for the next one at a time thing or how they look now.

Just a note on CV boots: If open to the elements now the joint and grease inside is quite likely compromised even if the joint is fine it may fail earlier with just a boot and not whole rebuilt (or so called) with new and joint new or tested out good for resale and use again.

Sorry again. I avoided too much on a few models that were very fussy about dealer only OE parts and this is one of them and the dang dealer for this brand means I would have to go get parts or wait longer to get them to me which would be a dis-service to you.

You really need to know who can do what that is needed for this car around you. I can't know that from here,

T
