Won't start - "Clicking" noise while not attempting start Sign In

1998 Chevey Suburban 4x4, 5.7L V8, 100K miles (rebuilt engine).

My wife just called and said when she went to get in the truck there was a "clicking" noise, sorta like the dead battery clicking noise, except she had not attempted to start it yet (key not even in the ignition). When she did try to start it, nothing. The clicking continued upon removing the key. She says there are no lights/signals on, just a "clicking" noise in the cab. Tried to get her to find someone to try to jump it and no one available, short of calling a garage/tow truck. Tried to walk her through disconnecting a battery cable until I can get home this afternoon and figure out what's going on, maybe even grab the multimeter to check the battery, but she got fustrated and hung up on me ("meeting to go to, can't talk")! Is there a possibilty that some portion of the electrical system is getting fried (i.e., is this going to lead to bigger problems before I can get to it this afternoon? I come home to a burned out hulk!)? Again, she looked under the hood and said the "clicking wasn't coming from a loose batter connection. Said it was inside the cab.

UPDATE
If "we" had looked for some light or signal left on, as suggested, we would have previously noted that the there was a "clicking", floor lamp flashing on and off that has apparently been doing so since Friday afternoon when the door was left ajar. And yes, the battery was drained (apparently had to charge a bit first but a jump finally started it). Eh, what the heck! It's been overdue getting a new battery anyhow!

Also noted that I scrimped a bit when I ID'd engine size... this bad boy's a 7.4L!

you're likely just going to need a new battery unless something was accidently left on to drain it..the clicking noise you hear is one of the relay is trying to acctivate but because of the low voltage it can't,jump it and see if the clicking goes away.
