Won't Crank After Running 2003 Chevy Tracker (Suzuki Grand Vitara) Sign In

2003
Chevrolet (Suzuki)
Tracker (Grand Vitara)
2.0 I4
289k miles

Greetings all. First post, but I've seen a lot of good information elsewhere, so I have hope!

I bought the Tracker in 2016, since then it's been a dependable work car up until about four months ago. It started very intermittently at first- I'd gone to the store after driving about three miles, went in and came back to leave about 10 minutes later only to find the engine wouldn't crank; all lights and fuel pump worked, and the Starter Engagement Servo was clicking with every turn of the key- the starter simply wasn't turning. After a few minutes of inspecting the engine and wiring with the hood up i tried to start it again, this time it turned over without hesitation. Having previously dealt with bad starters before, I replaced the unit (A particularly easy starter swap by my experience!), afterward the symptom seemed to go away for a few weeks. However eventually it did happen again, and seems to be getting slowly, but progressively worse (requiring longer down time between shorter run times). Long story short, I've parts chased the starter, alternator and battery -checked all the fuses (good)-and inspected all the relays i can find (replaced a corroded horn and electric fan relay). The problem persists. The car runs perfectly normal otherwise (Getting 23-25mpg), and starts perfectly well when cold. I have found that running the AC seems to require more cool-down time between starts. But once the engine sits (typically with the hood up or at least popped open) for a varying length of time, the engine starts normally, there is no heat soak symptom such as a slow crank.

Any ideas gentlemen?

I've had no luck finding an accurate wiring diagram (to see if I'm missing a relay somewhere) or even a decent repair manual outside of learning Japanese.

The next things I'll be replacing are the battery cables, and if that doesn't work I'll try another starter with a thermal blanket wrap...OR let the girlfriend talk me into leaving it at a shop until they've 'fixed it'. Crazy

To me this smells of a poor battery cable connection somewhere. It could be at any of the power points or just as easily one of the ground cables.

If you have 2 people there when the problem occurs, have one person trying to start it while the other person yanks on cables to see if the system responds to any of it.

I've actually tried that as well, I'll have the GF turning the key after or while I'm moving the cables and wires. They cables are tight at either end, but there's several running through the harness, so a jacket could've have rubbed through... I'll have to cut the plastic harness jacket off and separate the wires to see. Thanks for the reply!

You could also try moving the shifter to neutral to see if that makes any difference.

Here is the wiring diagram
