Windshield Wipers Not Working. Motor or Switch? Sign In

Ok I have a 1994 Mazda Protege with about 190,000 miles (yeah) on it. A few weeks ago the windshield wipers started working only half the time. When they wouldn't work we would turn the switch off and on a few times or just leave the switch on and they would eventually come on. Now they don't come on at all. I figured it was the motor so I went to a junkyard and got another one (I couldn't afford a new one at the time). So I switched out the motor and still nothing. I figure it's definitely the switch but the washer fluid pump works just fine. I would think if the switch was bad it would affect the washer fluid pump. What do you guys think?

It could be the switch. It could also be a bad wire from the switch to the motor. Since the washer is working, and it sounds as if it is on the same switch cluster as the wipers, there is probably power to the switch. The first thing to do is use a test light or volt-ohm meter to see if you have power on the wire at the motor when you turn the wiper switch to the on position.
