Wierd acting S-10 Blazer Sign In

Year of vehicle: 1995
Make of vehicle: Chevrolet

Model of vehicle: S-10 Blazer 4-WD
Engine size: 4.3 Vortec v6
Mileage: 226,000


I need help.... This thing is driving me to the poor house and insane asylum at the same time.
On an average day (it is cold here in TN) my car will run approximately 20 miles as smooth as silk.
At any given moment it starts acting like you are cutting the key on and off if the engine is between pulling and holding back, slight pressure in the gas pedal makes it run until it catches up to non-pull again.
The longer you drive it, the worse it gets. If you stop, the RPM gauge runs up and down from 700 to 1800 Rpm a few times and dies. Most of the time it will restart but still runs badly and other times it will not start...will crank but not start). If you let it sit for a while (maybe an hour) it will start and run fine for a few minutes and then the whole thing starts all over.
I don't mind buying parts to fix it but every mechanic says it's something different.
Any ideas???

Lets start off with what you have already done to it and also get a fuel pressure reading and see how long it will hold line pressure..

Sidom,

First of all I apologize for the red text, didn't even pay attention to it.

Since Black Friday when this all started:
Had a electronic module put in the distributor. (at least that is what I was told)
Had another mechanic keep it 2 days and he couldn't find anything wrong altho
it quit on him 2 times.
Had the EGR valve replaced. (at least that is what I was told and this guy said
his computer showed a bad temperature sending unit) Put in a new Temperature sending unit
I have changed places where I buy fuel.
Another mechanic says It needs a Throttle positioning switch.
Have also been told the Computer is going out
Not sure if any of these guys have checked the fuel pressure but I will do that.



(just for reference, what next if the fuel pressure shows to be OK?)

(If this thing were a pre computer/Catalic converter car I could fix it in my sleep. I made a good living working on cars/trucks/tractors for many years untill the computers got beyong my relm).

Sidom,

Looks like you "nailed" it Cool

Finally got the pressure tested. Got wierd readings so we replaced the fuel filter and had no change in the pressure readings. Installed a new fuel pump, pressures changed and the car runs great...so far.

Sidom,

It's me again, pleae help.

I put a new fuel filter, fuel pump and strainer on the car. We checked the pressure and everything showed to be OK.
We let it run for about 1/2 an hour and then I drove it home and it ran like new.
After sitting for 2 days I started to local grocery and made it about 10 miles and it started the same symptoms again. I let it sit for about 30 minutes, started fight up, went about 4 miles and started the same old thing all over.

Any new suggestions?

Yeah, what was the fuel pressure during the failure? Checking the pressure when it's running good doesn't tell you anything.

Was that reading at the exact moment the truck was running bad?

Thats what the guage registered...The car was running badly, RPM guage bouncing from 700 to 1800 RPM.
To keep it running while checking fuel pressure, I held the brake, car in gear, and run RPM up to 1800.

40PSI is not enough fuel pressure for a Vortec. That truck needs a minimum or 55PSI to run. Try momentarily pinching off the return line and see if the pressure spikes up.
