Why is SEARS charging me almost $1000 to get my struts fixed?? Sign In

Hello!

I have a 2000 Toyota Highlander, 135+ mileage, and it's a 4WDV6. I went in to get my car serviced because my steering wheel was shaking a lot when I pressed on the breaks when I drive. I thought it was the alignment and the mechanics (when evaluated by them) said that it was also the breaks in the front. Now, we had the front brakes fixed 2 months ago because it was making terrible sratching noises and a weird claning noises when I went over bumps, rail road tracks, etc., but the Mechanics said (at Sears) that they did not do a good job of fixing it or something like to that affect. Anyway, I got my brakes, alignment fixed. Overall, it came to $334. plus tax. After getting it serviced, they hit me with "You need to get your struts fixed!" and he went on and on about how many years you have to service it and I wasn't eve paying attention to what he said because my eyes were fixed on how much it was going to cost me...almost $1000. It was the SENSA-TRAC STRUTS, and it cost $200 a piece it looked like. 4 SENSA-TRAC STRUTS. Is this how much it cost? Can I get it a little lower? I like Sears and I trust them with my car but I can't afford that. Please help. I'd rather fix it my self.

The monro sensa-tracks are top of the line struts and are expensive. After they replace them, you will need another alignment. You could just do fronts for now and rears later, or you can go to another shop for an estimate there.

Thanks for replying so quickly, a few more questions, since I can fix one area at a time, how long can i wait to get the other area fixed? And, how much would that cost? Lastly, will the mechanics try to get me to fix both at one time and what should I say to them if they become pushy? Thank you so much!!

Leah, you can do the fronts now and the rears later if money is an issue. If they get pushy, you can just take your car to another shop. Some mechanics unfortunately try to sell sell sell. You are the paying customer and it is your final decision as to what work gets done on your vehicle and when. Remember, the customer is always right. And, the customer always has the right to walk out of a pushy garage. There are plenty of other shops who are honest and would love to have your business. Usually, the big franchises are the ones whose service writers take the sales course. Most independent shops just diagnose, estimate, communicate, and repair. This is how a shop builds a good customer database.
