Why does my car keep cranking after startup? Sign In

1997 Pontiac Sunfire SE / 2.2 Engine / 208,000 miles.

Three weeks ago I went out to start my 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. It started the car, but continued to crank after cutting the car off and removing the key. It continued until it drained the battery completely.

I put in a brand new battery, new alternator and new starter. The car ran fine for three days, until tonight. I left work and went to the store. As I was about to leave the store, the same issue begin to happen again. Luckily I had the tools to cut the power and not do any damage.

I waited 20 minutes, started the car normally and was able to make it home with no issues. I then started the car 20 more times in the driveway and it started the car normally.

I am all out of ideas and truly need some help with this issue. This is the only issue I have had with this car and has become a major headache for me.

Does the car have any remote starter?

You might want to try swapping out the starter relay.

No remote starter for it. And the mechanic I went to told me that the 97 Sunfire doesn't have a starter relay.

You're right. that pretty much only leaves the ignition switch.

Wow. Thank you, I didn't know an ignition switch could cause that sort of problem. Why is that if you don't mind me asking?

It is the only source of power in the circuit.

Understand that I am talking about the Ignition switch, not the lock.

Some of those had a recall for ignition switches that required a relay installed in the starter circuit to keep the high solenoid current out of the ignition switch. Follow the small solenoid trigger wire from the starter and see if it goes to a relay. The relay was usually mounted on the radiator core support.
