Why are my Mazda P5 serpentine belts squealing? Sign In

I have a 2002 Mazda Protege5 2.0L 150,000km that had squealing serpentine belts. One was completely destroyed & other was fine but I changed both myself. Everything was fine for 2 days and then they started to squeal again (on and off) it mostly happens when I start my car and then it goes away, and randomly when I’m driving. Why would brand new serpentine belts be squealing on and off, and how can I fix it?
Thank you

Was the belt that was destroyed the one driving the A/C compressor?.. If so you might have a seized A/C compressor locking up when engaged.

No. I dont really use the a/c that much and that belt was the one that looked in very good shape. It was the one running the alternator, crank, p/s = completely destroyed. the ribs of the belt were cracked and chuncks missing

If what was left of the belt with cracks showing in ribs it was possibly way to late to be replaced. When one comes off or breaks it will look like all hell.

If suspecting a bad pulley or component is at fault just take that one off and spin the components by hand you might find something wrong that way.

Noisy belts can be a silly as the quality of the belt. If all else checks out just mist it with water (engine on cool side) and a bad belt should shut up for a short while,

It's possible that you don't have enough belt tension. The alternator really starts kicking out the amps right after the engine starts because the starter knocks the battery down. This puts a large load on the alternator and if the belt isn't tight enough, it will slip. When the belt is slipping, rubber is being ate off it.

You should look at the service information for your vehicle and find out what the belt is supposed to be tensioned to. Don't over tension it or you'll take out the front mount bearing on the alternator, the water pump bearing, or even the crank main bearing.

It also wouldn't hurt, after making sure your belt is tight, to make sure that your battery is good. A weak battery will cause the alternator to work harder.

One last thing to check for. Make sure you don't have something leaking onto the belt like engine oil or coolant.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
