Which repairs most urgent and which can save till later? Sign In

My mechanic is changing a blown head gasket on a manual 2001 Honda CRV (2 Litre engine) which is not a cheap service. He has notified me of a range of additional issues he's picked up on, however I cannot afford to do them all at once.

I'm hoping that I can get the most crucial done and the rest at another time.

Any advice which of these might be best to get done immediately?

-Rear shocks leaking
-Rear trailing arms broken
-Rubber engine mounting worn badly, needs replacement
-Oil sump gasket oil leak
-Front brake pad very low
-Suggested since car is already open, may be a good opportunity to change water pump and timing belt

Appreciate any feedback, thanks!

Hi. Quite the list and IMO most important is broken trailing arms to suspension you'd lose control of the car by surprise if a full break. All important not to wait on really.

Are each of those itemized as a cost or just the list?

What's your sum total to put this back to good condition if the head gasket job really works out without unseen damages beyond that?

My idea is maybe time to find another whole car and check that out first carefully seem this guy may want this car listing a bit much needed?? This could be quite inexpensive to fix parts wise and more time/labor wise if not a rust bucket people still like to keep at these cars or let them go if that much such that used junkyard parts should be plentiful.

OK: Change course here if you really like this one just bad timing $$ wise can you quit driving it some is not going to wait very long or be serious so time to make a call yourself on the thing,

Agree with Tom

Depends on how Head gasket job turns out

Whats the mileage on this? important in decision making....
Reason for Head gasket job?..Did this overheat? What lead up to this diagnosis?

Water Pump and Timing belt are always a good idea, Especially since he's in there. How long since replaced? I would do it if at all possible
Tom is right, Trailing Arms broken, a Must do
Oil leak? Is it a leak or just seepage? That needs to be determined, a bad leak, gotta do it, seepage, another story.
Shocks, can be put off.
Brake pads low, depending on how worn , maybe able to buy time
Have him show you.
Engine mount, if its broken, its a must do
So in my opinion,, all except the shocks and maybe brakes can be put off.

But if this is high mileage, how much do you want to sink into it?
What is overall vehicle condition?
Depending, May be best to get it running where it has value and shop around as Tom stated, if its in the budget.

Hi folks,

Mileage on this car is close to 300,000 KMs so about
187,000 miles. Total cost for gasket and the extras list would be & $4600 AUD so about $3050 USD.

For that price I could get another used car, but no idea what issues I might inherit. And expensewise I'm already committed more than halfway into the total cost of repairs into the current car with the head gasket repair.

The mechanic mentioned to consider to only do these repairs if I intended to drive it for 1-3 years more.

So I guess I will bite the bullet and gradually get this baby up to scratch.

Thank you to both commenters and particularly for pointing out crucial issues that need fixing, cheers!

$3,000 into an 01 car with 187K on it?

Sounds like you are throwing good money after bad.
Sell the car for parts and buy another one with lower miles.
