Where is the MAPS Sensor on Hyundai Elantra 2009? Sign In

Hi. I’m trying to locate the MAPS sensor on my Hyundai Elantra 2009. I can’t find it anywhere. I tried google and I came across with other Hyundai models but nothing helped.

There’s nothing on the service manual about it, but had no problems buying it at Auto Zone. Also the part number (39300-22600) and diagram is listed at a OEM Hyundai parts reseller.

Does someone knows? I’ve been looking for hours! Thanks

It likely doesn't have one. The car has a Mass Air Flow sensor and they rarely use both.

Ohhhh I see. Thanks answering. I was looking everywhere and cannot find it. Well… off to AutoZone to return the sensor I bought yesterday.

Why did you buy it in the first place?

Ditto? What prompted you to buy it? The "Zone" is OK don't expect parts outlets to know what you need that's up to you. So what problem do you think you have?

Re: Where is the MAPS Sensor on Hyundai Elantra 2009? Sign In

Well… here’s is the story. A few days ago, while I was driving, the A / C, radio and dash lights went off and on quickly. This happened to me about 4 or 5 times. The engine never lost power. The next day when I stopped at the traffic light, the same thing happened to me, but this time the car turned off and the battery light turned on. I started the car and it started fast. This happened to me 2 more times until I got home.

I checked the battery with the engine off and it had 12.3v. When I turned it on, it turned off quickly. On one occasion it stayed on and the battery did not go up from 12.3v. I took the battery to AutoZone. They charge it up to 12.6v and did a load test and everything was fine.

I installed a new ground wire to the negative terminal as it was corroded and a little loose. Maybe that caused a false contact or short circuit damaging other components in the car.

I also checked the alternator voltage and sometimes it was 14v and sometimes not ... I assumed the voltage regulator was bad and bought a new alternator. This time when starting the car, the battery had 14v, but I had a hard time getting the car to turn on since I still had the same problem. The car would start and immediately shut down and did not show the Check Engine light either.

When I managed to start the car, I ran several tests and the only one that didn't pass was:

"Fuel System Bank 1 / TEST 71 DATA"

Value: 85.7s
Min: 0
Max: 60.0s
Status: FAIL

I checked the live status with an OBD2 scanner while the car was running and found some values that seemed abnormal to me:

SHRTFT1: -2.3%
LONGFT1: -2.3%
RPM: 642 (idle)
LAMBDA11: 0.996

A mechanic suggested that I install a new fuel pump and that did not solve the problem. It kept turning off. So I read that those values correspond to a rich mixture and looked for the causes. I discarded many things because a few months ago I installed many new parts such as the MAF Sensor, Purge Valve, PCV VALVE, I cleaned the TPS and it gives .2 closed to 4v wide open, spark plugs, ignition coil, I cleaned the entire trhotle body, uncapped the injectors with carburetor cleaner and a 9v battery .... and as far as I read, the next thing was the MAPS.

Since the car doesn't have MAPS, maybe it's the oxygen sensor. What do you think?

Oh man, you are so far out in left field. A little bit of knowledge can be a very dangerous thing.

There is nothing wrong with that live data. You probably didn't even get it into closed loop first before reading that. The computer doesn't even look at sensor data in open loop. There was nothing wrong with your battery either and no reason to even suspect it.

This whole thing started with an electrical supply problem. I don't know how you found your way into engine performance sensors and a fuel pump.

You needed to look at electrical supply connection points, fuse boxes, ignition switches, etc.

Open Loop? The scanner says:

FUELSYS1: CL

This is while Idle. So that means Close Loop, right? I’m not an expert :(

It doesn't matter what the fuel system is doing. None of this has anything to do with the electrical system cutting in and out.

Re: Where is the MAPS Sensor on Hyundai Elantra 2009? Sign In

Yikes - you found the bad battery connection is/was part of the whole problem now lots worse.

All you did was one cable end not check them all? The spikes you saw sound normal if you just opened the door (lights on) would read 12.3 for a while.

It's failing to get steady and proper help from the battery. Cables first and on as Hammer just said.

No CEL when it stalled with ignition on? Does that work? KO,EO it should light all warning bulbs.

It has lost battery power while running it seems to me. Gotta solve that new parts tossing isn't the way.

Alternator will burn up if disconnected by corrosion or internally failed would be caught with a bench test necessarily.

Learn how to test voltage drops with U-Bolt battery types it burned you once isn't over yet.

People in general need to know age of batteries and take care of them such that corrosion doesn't happen sometimes they are wet with acid and shouldn't ever be on current ones really don't vent unless a serious problem.

I'll bow out this car probably has a host of problems now over a neglected connection or shorted battery inside - some will charge up but the warning was there.

AGE of them. AYOR at about 4 years from date it was made they are all marked or out of your view.

Good luck this started with a neglected battery cable IMO/guess unknown how much took a hit,

The battery has a built date of November 2020. Maybe I should do a video of the problem and share the link here.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I checked all the fuses and did a parasitic draw test to check if there was a short somewhere but the consumption never went up from .2 mV. So no Power drain hmmmm

Again, a little knowledge will just get you into trouble.

Parasitic drain is measured in amps, not volts. Second, a short circuit will not show up in a drain test. There is nothing in your symptoms that indicate a parasitic drain.

Lastly, checking fuses will not find your problem. You have an intermittent total voltage loss, not any individual circuit and fuses don't come back on their own once blown.

You have a connection problem somewhere, possible main power coming into the fuse box or a bad ignition switch. (not the lock). You are going to have to follow the power supply all the way from the battery to the ignition switch testing the connections.

Thanks, I’m gonna check that. My bad… I meant to say mA. I’m not an electrician, but I have 2 years of experience with electronics and micro soldering. Also, to be sure, I’m gonna check all voltage drops, continuities, resistance in cables and thermal camera just in case something comes up.

I’ll let you know if I find something.

Re: Where is the MAPS Sensor on Hyundai Elantra 2009? Sign In

I doubt you were testing that drain properly judging from your results.

I'm giving you the correct instructions on how to test for drain but just put them away for now. That is not your issue here.

BATTERY DRAW PROCEDURE

There is a procedure for finding a battery draw like that.

You will need a digital ammeter and a jumper wire with clips on the ends to do this.
First rig any door switches so you can have a door open without triggering the interior lights and unplug the hood light. Remove one battery cable and attach the meter in series between the battery cable and battery post. Take the jumper wire and also attach it the same way. Leave the jumper wire on for at least 30 to 40 minutes to expire all the automatic timers. Now remove the jumper wire and read the meter. Anything over 50ma is too much draw. The way you locate this is to start removing fuses one at a time until the meter drops to normal level. This will be the circuit with something staying on. Determine what components are part of that circuit and check them individually until the problem is isolated.
Note that the act of pulling fuses will often restart some timers so you may have to wait for them to expire if that happens

Here is a short video. Notice that after a few seconds after shutting down, the dash lights comes ON again. I also noticed that the AC blower turned ON for 3 or 5 seconds when it’s OFF. I don’t know if that’s normal. Maybe a System Check? Here it is.

https://youtu.be/gd3BFcQpu_k

This was my first try turning ON the car. It turned ON after the 2nd try. I also noticed that If I left the key in ON position for a while, the car starts at 1,500 RPM and slowly goes down to around 600 RPM’s aprox.

I don't need a video. I understand what you described. The video doesn't help because I can't tell if everything shut off or you turned the key off.

Never touched the key. Only to start the car. I left it at ON position and the lights came ON a few seconds by their self. I want to add that I noticed the car is a bit shaky while driving back home now.

Hello! So I checked every fuse and tested the relays and everything is working good. But now the symptoms are a bit different because now the dash lights turns off by itself when the key is in ON position. Also I noticed that the car cranks and turns on but dies exactly when the key turn back to the ON position. So I assumed is a bad Ignition switch. But now I have 2 questions.

I pulled the panels and saw that the ignition switch which have 6 cables, is also wired to a 40A relay ( Hella 40A 960 388-46). Is this a kill switch? I bought this car used…

And, should I replaced the plastic ignition switch that have the 6 cables or should I buy the whole assembly that comes with all the parts?

No, that is not a kill switch.

Not sure if you have a choice on the switch.

This appears to be the only way it is sold.

I said I stay out but didn't :-)
I'd toss that switch and go back to the 40A relay you said it went to. Anything there or around there look burnt or had been too hot?

That goes for connectors that are electrical for anything many are visual without proving it's the problem needs to know why?

Refresh (boring about this it still matters) when you found a corroded battery cable that's a clue too.

Said (I think) car 12V batteries are sealed or all I know of. For yard or off road things things IDK. You shouldn't be able to add water or spill any once not that long ago you could or couldn't by brands now no. Those (not this) with batteries inside cabin (smart idea engineers) you hooked up vents so when it spit it went outside, same with ones for trunks (Rolls Royce no less) and some others.

That's horrible acid that makes wild destruction never mind emits hydrogen gases a tad or tons depending on problem. Look for those emergency vent holes on any now just to control rare explosions from concentrated gas like the HINDENBURG of age old times - same gas !!

Here’s a video showing the wiring and the relay. It’s attached to a black box… hmmm

https://youtu.be/3ufQ48KMlT4

Also, I found that Auto Zone sells the plastic part with the wiring and the connector. They also sell it as a whole assembly like the picture shared previously.

! Saw that and in shock. That's got to be fixed up B-4 you move on. There shouldn't be "scotch lock" connector to cut wires AND a bare one just twisted up there!
ALL bets off till that's back to OE designs IMO near sure.
This car you said you bought used, fine tons of folks do. Did the title clear and or show it's history? That looks more like it was stolen once and a title washed - still an IMO guess.
IDK. I feel for you. When younger would be looking for all wires used for a 2009 that lead up to plugs for this stuff it would be old enough to do at a "Pick Your Own Parts" place if car overall was beyond SALVAGE repair so parts only.
It's got to get back in order or this is peeing into the wind seeing that!

Best of luck, you'll need some,

Tom

Here’s an update. So I installed a new Ignition Switch and discarded the relay that was attached to the old one and now starts like a Maserati and runs like a Lamborghini.

No more issues. Thanks for all the help guys. This was a hard one for me haha.

I didn't realize that relay was added on. You must have an aftermarket alarm on there. Glad you got it fixed though.
