Weird stuttering during idle and acceleration - Nissan Xterra 2004 Sign In

Hi.
The car can be started without issues when it wasn't used for a few hours, i.e. in the morning.
The stuttering occurs after about 30 minutes driving, when idling and when accelerating. It is getting progressively worse from that point on. The engine has already died 2x while the car was rolling, idling, towards a traffic light. The engine can be started again without issues but the stutter is bad and the engine dies soon after when I take the foot of the gas pedal.

The problem has been there for 1 week.
The engine light has been on for 2 years without any garage being able to find what's wrong.

Car: Nissan Xterra 2004 4x4 petrol

Thank you in advance for your help!

If it is a misfire going on, you shouldn't drive it until what type of misfire is going on is determined and repaired. Those have pre-cats that go bad and sand out the engine. Then you'll be buying an engine. If it is a mechanical or ignition related issue, the un-burnt fuel will wreck the cat(s), if it hadn't already.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
