Thanks.............. links deleted

Original post

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the great info on this site, it has helped me a few times. But i really want to know!

is there a website that provides good information for car care & maintenance. Preferably with Videos!!

i have spent hours sifting through forums and youtube videos. sometimes i find exactly what i need but normally the quality is low, and the information is bad.

I am trying to save money by doing my own maintenance on my 2003 Civic, my owners manual says that i am due for an oil change, automatic transmission fluid change, spark plugs and air filter. A friend told me the trans fluid can be a little tricky.

PLEASE! if you know of a good site let me know.

Nothing you are going to find for free. There are instructional videos for sale by a number of different sources or you can subscribe to an information source like Alldata but that info is put together for professionals and isn't written for the novice. The rest of the world makes a living from their knowledge, unlike the free help we offer here from actual technicians donating their time.

I hope thats not true.

I have seen good video's, and sites that offer free mechanics help. So i know the information does exist somewhere.

The problem is that "youtube" for example is full of crap like this

That's the chance you take with info on the Internet. Sure, there's lots of stuff out there, but which fool posted it this week.

Even though they were trying to inject some humor, the procedure in that video for changing your oil was spot on.

haha, there should be a like button.

i have seen for example mechanic shops that created video's to "help" people.. but the goal was obviously to promote themselves. im surprised one of the major mechanic companies doesnt have something like this.

Why would a reputable business want to just give away stuff like that? This is how people make a living.

I didnt actually watch the video because of how it started.. but it doesnt exactly inspire confidence if you know what i mean.

When it comes to my car, i want to make sure i do it right. I can't afford the mechanic for every little thing. The life of a student.

You can find some instructional stuff at a couple of the forum sites but I won't vouch for the real world accuracy on them.

@Hammer Time

"Why would a reputable business want to just give away stuff like that? This is how people make a living."

i can think of a couple reasons:

1) If i had a mechanic that showed me how to do the basic stuff by myself, saving me time and money. i would for sure go to him when i had a real problem.

2) to promote the name. internet traffic would give a lot of marketing for someone with locations around the country.

3) why does anyone create a website? there is money to be made becuase of the high volume of traffic.

There are people that are in the Internet business and there are people that are in the auto repair business. People in the repair business have no incentive to teach people how to do themselves what they are in the business of selling. Maybe teaching people how to get better fuel mileage or take better care of their car but not to perform the services they sell.

Now the other side of the coin is people that are in the Internet business. They are more in the business of entertainment and not technical repair. Their goal is to get people to visit the site so advertisers will want their products viewed by them. They are more than willing to post so called "instructional videos" but you could lose a car listening to them.
Believe me, we pay serious money for vehicle information services ourselves.

It's not that difficult to change your own oil. There is so much information on the net, in the library, and in the auto parts stores on performing simple maintenance practices on your vehicle. If you really want to learn, you just have to put forth the effort to find the information your looking for.

Some people don't want to perform their own maintenance or are too busy in their lives with their jobs, kids, etc. to do that kind of stuff. Could you see my 87 year old grandpa that can barely walk sliding under a car? I don't think so.

i know changing my oil is easy, but changing my transmission fluid is not. oil was just an example of the reason its hard to find what im looking for.

and i am part of the world that is young and able to do my own maintenance and can't really afford to pay for it. With the recession i know there are tons of people in the same boat.

By definition, "capable" means already knowing how, not expecting someone that makes his living that way to teach you how to do it yourself.
