98 Ford Contour 4 cyl 2.0 120,000 miles.
I had a timing belt put in because the car quit. When it was fixed it didn't idle very well and when taking off from a stop it wanted to kill.
Ford told me I needed a VCT so I spent a fortune and had them put it in. It ran great for about 500 miles and the timing belt went out again. The timing belt was under warranty so I had them replace that again. Now they tell me the VCT is bad again because it runs like it did before I had the VCT replaced. My question is does the timing belt and the VCT have to be syncronized somehow or is this all coincidence? This all happened in about 500 miles.

90% of the problems that occur with that engine after a belt was replaced is due to the belt not being timed correctly. the dealer should know better but I've seen it happen to many techs. I have never seen a bad VCT though.
It wouldn't be setting a PO340 code, would it?

Agree with HT. Also, incorrect oil viscocity can cause a problem with the VCT. Check your owner's manual. Should be using either 5W20 or 5W30. Anything heavier will cause a problem, as well as dirty oil/filter.
Have had quite a few that a simple oil change fixed. With that said, again, agree with HT.

Ford has changed my oil every 3000 miles for years but that isn't saying they couldn't have screwed up. As far as the code goes, I couldn't tell you if that one came up I'd have to ask them.
