Uneven brake wear Sign In

Hi yall. 2002 Chevy Prizm 120k. I changed the brake pads this morning there was a funny wear pattern. The driver side pads were both completely worn through to the rotor and the rotor needed replacement. Both of the passenger side pads were only worn about half way though and the rotor was fine. The sliders on both sides were free and there was nothing wrong on the driver side to explain why the pads wore through twice as quickly as the ones on the passenger side. Ive seen this before on other cars and I assumed that the previous person working on the car only changed one side. However Im the one who changed the pads on this car last year and I know I did both (as I always do). Anybody know of a reason for this excessive wear? thanks

That can be a bad flex hose on that side but it can also be due to someone's driving habits of resting their left foot on the brake lightly while driving.

Yes I’ve seen this a number of times and as you stated there were no visible signs of what caused it; along with no braking issues.
What I’ve been told by instructors at brake clinics; is to replace the calipers along with the flex hoses.
With the caliper there might be some form of binding that is causing one to not completely release or another not apply as easily; when they are heated to normal operating temp.
The flex lines; there might be one that is partially collapsing when hydraulic pressure is applied. In your case the right side is possibly collapsing making the left do more of the braking when initially applied.
You would think you’d feel something as in a pull while braking; but I guess it is so little that it isn’t felt but will cause the uneven ware?
That’s what I’ve been doing and I haven’t seen the uneven ware again on the same vehicle.
One last note; make sure that the system is bled properly, not leaving any air in the system.
