Transmission/Clutch problem? Sign In

I just bought a 98 chevy cavalier RS with 197k miles on it. I expected some problems with it, most obvious is the ball joints, that i can fix and diagnose on my own. The car has a 2.2L 4 cylinder in it, manual transmission of course.
Problem is this, although the shifting is..a little rough, which could just mean the clutch needs bled or changed. I can't hardly get it into 5th gear. It goes as far as the shifter allows, and just grinds like its almost there but just not far enough. My first thought was it was the synchronizer, but when i do get it to go into 5th gear, it has never once popped out of gear on me. Could it be a linkage? I really know nothing about transmissions other then how to watch the fluids and how to shift them properly. Any help would be great.

Just trying to get the ball rolling here, and assuming you have a floor shift, and your hydrolic clutch is working properly, You can start by checking for interference between the shift handle and floor cutout or there may be something restricting travel in the internal shifter componants. You can inspect the shift rail and fork system, synchroniser system and gear clutch teeth for restricted travel. ( sounds like a lot of work to me)

from what i have checked there is no restriction. While i was changing the oil today my dad took a look at it and he said the pin in the linkage seems kind of worn out...which would explain why it will sometimes still shift into 5th for me with no problems.
Im not sure what its actually called. Its directly above the transmission and it moves when i move the shifter. I sound like a real retard, i'm not sure what its called so i dont know the part im looking for or if thats the actual problem.

Sounds like it may be time to get it in the air and have someone take a look. May be just a linkage pin, not major trans work, but get it verified.
