Runs/drives like a charm. Pulled up trans fluid dipstick the other day and examined the fluid. It's nice and red with no air bubbles, grit, metal shavings, etc. Still, it's probably the original trans fluid (I bought it from a little old lady who likely never had it changed, but who knows.) For the sake of durability I'd like to change it out and replace it w/synthetic trans fluid (I'm starting college in the fall, and I'd like to keep this car a very long time). I bought the shop manual, and dropping the pan/changing the filter doesn't look difficult at all. I'd also like to "flush" the tranny/torque converter by disconnecting the tranny cooler lines and pouring new fluid in as the old is pumped out. I have a couple of questions, however: 1. I've heard and read about all sorts of horror stories about trannies sometimes dying right after having their fluid changed. Many of these seem to have been high-mileage situations with a great deal of deposits and accumulated scum/burnt fluid/etc. Seeing that the mileage is quite low (and the fluid clean) on this car, do I have anything to fear? Or does the raw age of the fluid matter too in these situations? 2. Will I have to worry about fluid leakage through these seals with the lighter synthetic trans fluid? Thanks in advance. I question loosing a trans cooler line to get more fluid out. With just the pan removed you don't get it all as you know. Even so with just that and a new filter you've helped it and clean the pan spotless, also don't overtighten its bolts - you can always go back and snug them up. Overtightening can cause leaks?? I use synthetic trans fluid and have had no ill effects from it.
