When I first start my car and drive for a few minutes, I press the brake pedal to stop and the front end of the car and the brake pedal shake like it's about to fall apart. After using the brakes a few times, the problem goes away. It seems that it happens only when the car hasn't been driven in several hours/over night. I checked the brake fluid and the level is fine. My husband just did the brakes (everything, including the rotors) about 6 - 8 months ago. What is this? It's a 98 Honda civic with 154,000 miles on it, if that makes any difference.

I've asked on another message board, and the general consensus is that it's warped rotors. When I said the car shakes like it's about to fall apart, what I meant to say is that it shakes like I'm driving 80 miles per hour down a dirt road with two flat front tires and the road is laden with potholes. :D I've driven a car with bad rotors and thin pads before (numerous times) and it NEVER shakes like this. Also, when you have bad rotors, it does it every time you brake. With my current problem, after using the brakes a few times, the problem stops and the car brakes normally.

Got to go back and check those brakes again. "Everything" apparently didn't include new calipers, anti-rattle kit, or that the pins (id used) were new or good enough to re-lube.

It's not really anyone's fault but rotors can rust overnite! Cheap ones especially and can feel like they are in dirt for a while and then fine for the rest of that day or longer depending on weather. Pads can absorb water too but dry out too. Some are better than others.

Go back and check it. You claim of 80 MPH on a rough/dirt road is scary and if that bad you might have a real problem to deal with. Don't ignore it AND be sure wheels are on tight enough/properly too,

T
