out of the blue yesterday my son's 69 VW squareback wagon's gas pedal seems stuck....can cruise about 25mph without touching gas pedal. Brakes are now hard to press as well. brakes were replaced a few months ago. have cleaned out all possible debris around pedals. Don't know what else to do. Please help!

Debbie; You are really taxing my memory, here. LOL...I'm pretty certain that these still had mechanical linkage. Can't remember for sure, but '69 may have been fuel injected vs. carburetion? Remove the engine cover and inspect the linkage where it connects to the throttle bodies, or carbs. A vacuum leak can cause a fast idle. These didn't come with power assit brakes, so the brakes could be getting hot from being improperly adjusted or from riding them to keep the speed down. Is this a standard, or automatic trans? Autos were very rare in this year, but possible. And, some had disc brakes in front. But, I think the priority here is to get the engine idle speed down to where it belongs, whether it be a linkage problem or other issue. I don't have much experience with the injected version. If carbureted though, you could disconnect the linkage from the carburetors and check for any binding between there and the throttle pedal. Let me know what you find. a Loren SW Washington
