Slop in Shifter 95 Grand Marquis

1995 Mercury Grand Marquis 150,000
The shifter on the steering column has become very sloppy, someone told me the shifter assembly is probably cracked and in need of replacement with a good used or new one. What do you think and is this a DIY project?

Your probably meaning the shift tube. Either the shift tube bushings are worn out, the bolts on the end of the tube that hold the shifter bracket are loose, of the tube itself is broken. Drop the column down and take a look, you'll see the problem.

Actually Tom, the column Ford used in that year had a pot metal tube that was very prone to snapping and is pretty simple DIY job. Replaced more than a few myself of that vintage.

I just fixed mine. It wasn't the tube at all. It was the bracket in the dash above the brake pedal which has two torx screws which had worked loose. It had got worse a little at a time. I removed the plastic and metal shield under the dash, above the brake pedal. Look up and wiggle the shifter, you will see if this is the problem. The bracket will be moving ( because it is loose) when you wiggle the shifter. Tighten the two screws and it's fixed. Hope that helps.
