Ford Explorer 2003 about 116,000 miles. My car ran great and then after stopping
for a few hours I went out and turned it on - no problem there but then it would
not shift out of park. Please help. Thanks.

1st see if you brk lights are working. If not check the fuses.
If all that is ok then more that likely there is a problem with the shift interlock mechanism and would have to be diagnosed.
A lot of those will have an override button or switch in the shifter area to manual release the shifter...
