I have a fairly deep trio of scratchs on my hood that I want to get repainted. After getting a few estimates (which ranged from $300 from the body shop the dealership outsources to - to $692) I'm curious what the standard practice is for this type of repair. I know the whole panel needs to be repainted, but some say it needs to be painted to within a hands width of the edge, while others say it should go straight to the edge of the panel for proper color blending. I'm also curious whether price has anything to do with quality in this sort of situation.
I know that the charges for removing the wiper fluid nozzles is a bit of bs, but am not sure about things like color tint. I know the car has clear coat that would also need to be reapplied.
For a bit of background, the car is a blue 2002 Toyota Rav4 with an impressive factory paint job that I'm trying to maintain. I'm in the Bay Area so if anyone has any recommendation of a good place around Mountain View I'm all ears. Are dealership repair partners going to do a better job than others?

Both estimate could be right for what you specify. Preparation for a great job that lasts is everything. The detail of removing the washers will be better than taping them off and I would ask for the whole hood to be done if it were mine on a car that I cared about.
Paint matching has become a total skill but don't expect them to age the same if you own this car long enough. Both jobs may look similar right away and you'll know.
As far as who in your area is best the base line is trust. The classic car meets are a great place to find the best of the best if that's what you want, Good luck, T
