We have two Ford pickup trucks and now they are both having the same trouble. The 1995 started first and when you started up a hill the speed totally drops down and it does not want tot shift into overdrive. Sometimes it does not even have any power from a standing start and has to slowly build up power before it starts to shift properly.

The other truck which is a 1994 does the same thing now. It also has backfire fits. I have checked some of the electrical connectors under the hood for corrosion but have not really found anything yet. When this one starts having the trouble and the power drops off and it starts backfiring then it is like the computer resets and the check engine light will come on, the airbag light will come on and then it starts to run better.

I have changed the plugs and wires in the 94 and the 95 is also in pretty good shape other than the normal wear and tear for their age.

I do not have a code reader right now but since this must be something common to these models I am hoping someone knows right off the top of their head what this might be without me having to get one.

I have been thinking it might be the computer? Or is there a sensor that can cause all of this.

They are both F-150's with 302 motors. One is 4 wheel drive and the other is not.

The self diagnostic system is there for a reason, so you don't have to use the crystal ball method to diagnose a problem.

Having the codes read is always the first step.

To use a quote from 'Raw Deal' saith the mob boss to Arnold - smart I like, smart ass I do not.

Real mechanics can diagnose a problem without computers on these old vehicles that give 4 or 5 or more trouble codes and still may not be the real problem. I thought you guys were real mechanics.

OK, mouthpiece. The thing you are going to learn now is that we are all professional techs that donate our time here for free but we don't take insults so this thread is closed and you are history.

Go ask the "wanna be's" at Autozone for their free help.

We can......

We could also do everything by hand as well.....But when there is air tools,,,,why would we waste all that time?

Scanners pull codes to help lead us to the problem area when it is a mechanical problem...So we could do it without one......Once again....why waste all that time?

You could've just did a couple of things....answered a few questions to get a handle on your problem....

Well......At least you feel better.....I guess that's one good thing
