Rough Idle & Engine Lag Sign In

I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L. It has developed a very rough idle almost to the point where I feel like it might die. It feels like it is maybe misfiring while idling, because it comes and goes repeatedly. I also noticed about the same time that when I try to accelerate from a complete stop that the truck really lags and again sometimes almost dies. It sort of sputters and hesitates and then finally goes. I changed the air filter hoping that might do the trick, but no such luck. I should add that the spark plugs are about a year old at the most. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Has computer been reset or battery disconnected for some reason?

Is check engine light on? Either way when running poorly it should have a code or more stored to direct you where to look next. Make sure all plug ins are intact underhood that might have been disturbed for any reason first to see it that is it.

From there we'll need more info if nothing found - miles and any pertinent history you can add,

T

The check engine light is not on. My truck has 96,000 miles on it. I'll get a code reader today and see what that says. I have never had any problems with this truck until now.

Re: Rough Idle & Engine Lag Sign In

That suggests you are buying a code reader? Big bucks for a good one. Find a place that will do it - some parts outlet do that as a courtesy.

Don't wait to fix this as anything that makes an engine run poorly is real hard on O2 sensors and worse the converter! Can get shockingly expensive and if early much avoided,
