Rotor Stuck on REALLY well!! Can't get it off to replace them... Sign In

Hi Guys,
I'm not sure if this is a common problem or not or if my attempts so far make sense, but I have a rotor with uneven wear on one side that really needs replacement. Problem is, the Philips head screw that hold the rotor in place are seized up like nobody's business!!

So far, I have tried many rounds of penetrant (such as WD-40, Blaster, and one other). I have tried heating up the screw, and then later on, the surrounding hub of the rotor to try and get one or the other to expand/contract and break the seal. So far, no luck. I added penetrant just now after failing with the propane-torch idea.

Is there any way I can do this I'm missing?

I have a 2005 Hyundai Elantra GLS (4-door sedan). I'm working on swapping out the front rotors.

Thanks guys!

-Fred

They aren't seized. They are just very tight and the Phillips slot doesn't give you anything to grab. You need to use an impact driver and they will come right out.

yea you def need an impact driver from now on....my guess is tho now the phillips head is so stripped out that nothing will work but drilling the head of the bolt off so the rotor will slide passed it. then you have to work on getting the rest of the screw out of the hub.

Innnteresting. Where did you find that one? Or are they all over the place?

I tried doing a Google search but I got mostly battery powered drills. Maybe I need to check Advance Auto or NAPA next.

yea, the Philips head is definitely starting to strip and I just found a video a little while ago where they drilled through the center of the screw (on a different car) to break out the screw without totally destroying the threads (I'm hoping I wont if I have to go that route).

Found some interesting ways of getting the rotor off - i.e. using screws, washers, and nuts to pop it off. But I think that would have to be after I free up those screws, otherwise they're going to get lost in there.

Google "manual impact driver". Advanced, Napa, Sears, ect. sell them.

Get you a ball peen hammer too. Don't use a claw hammer on the driver. A claw hammer can shatter on something like that.

Well, the first one came off after using a 2-pound sledge on the impact driver. I thought I would have to pry the rotor off, but I put penetrant around the screw in between every number of hits. Took me a while, but it eventually worked. Cooling off now and then back to it again in a bit! So psyched I got it to come off!!! Thanks for the advice!!

only problem now is one of the bolts that hold in the caliper brocket is in there really good... haha So now my goal is to try to get a breaker bar long enough (along with some anti-seize and tapping it with a hammer to get some vibration going there). Hopefully it'll work. I got a piece of rigid pipe about 2' long in case the breaker bar isn't generating enough torque.

not enough space for a torch - rubber boots and what not close by. hopefully i prevail!!!

They can be a little tight. Seems like your just plugging on along. Cool

Make sure you don't round the head of that bolt off or you will have big problems. Use only a good condition, 6 point socket and make sure it's on straight.

Fred - I take it you have succeeded with impact hammer on probably Phillips head screw and replace that screw if damaged from the attempts.

As I see it you are at removing caliper bracket now? Like Hammer said use good quality six point stuff - wrench or socket to get those going.

Plain brute force is not as good as some sudden shock. When if impact tools are not practical I've had great luck without damaging anything with box head longer wrenches and a rubber hammer vs just longer and longer tricks like pipe over tools to extend for torque. Heat - not practical no advised by me and plain propane isn't hot or fast enough AND ruins the intended strength of those type critical items wherever if to a glowing red not for this.

These things are meant to be tight and not loosen by themselves once in service on the road of course!

Tom - you were quite right! I am a big fan of the 2' of galvanized 1" OD pipe I got at Home Depot. It made for a great torque-multiplier for my friend's breaker bar :) haha

All the frustration was resolved in a moment with that up to the 6-point socket. Glad to have both shiny new rotors and and that ridiculously chewed up one in the trash now!

Thanks to all for your advice!!!!

Glad to hear you made it man. Welcome to our world that we deal with all the time. Remember in the future that those rubber pieces on the slides are cheap and expendible. If you need to bust out the torch and wreck them oh well, it comes with the territory. New ones are a phone call away.

Props to you for changing the brakes in sets even though one is OK. You won't believe what we get called for telling people it is needed. Brakes must always be treated in pairs or asking for trouble. Most people think we are trying to hustle them for money that way. But its the way it needs to happen.
