Rear Differential Fluid on Ford Escape Sign In

I have a 2001 Ford Escape with the 4wd and the 6liter engine. I'm way past the recommended fluid replacement on the differential and the transfer case so I decided to work on that today. I emptied the transfer case and measured the amount of fluid that came out so I could replace it correctly. The manual shows to refill with a max. of 12 ounces. But when I marked the container at the old fluid line, and refilled the case with that amount, I had to add quite a bit more. It states to fill it just below the fill hole so I figured as I was pumping the fluid in, once it reached that mark it would start coming out under the hose but it never did. I added around 12 ounces, but still couldn't feel liquid on my finger when I stuck it in the fill hole. Should I keep adding more?

I then decided to check the differential fluid to see if it even needed to be changed but when I removed the plug about 1/4 cup of dark black fluid came out. The car was sitting level and so my question is why that would have happened if the manual again states to fill it to just below the fill hole level. I didn't change or refill the fluid because I only have a liter on hand and it states to refill with a max of 1.5 liters.

Thanks for any advice.

take a look at the transfer case. its possible that the truck is on level ground but due to the drive angle, the transfer case might be slightly angled back.

Re: Rear Differential Fluid on Ford Escape Sign In

Are you certain of the engine size? 6L ? My manuals show 2.96 pints (1.4L) for the differential. Transfer case shows 12oz. of 75W-140.... Not sure I believe that. I've NEVER seen a transfer case hold that small of an amount.
Got to be a misprint. I'd call the local Ford dealership parts or service dept. to confirm. With the fill plug removed, I'd add until the fluid just started coming out. Same on the differential. But, that's me.Wink

Hello. Thanks for your reply. It was a misprint on my part, the engine is a V6, not a 6 liter. The small amount for the transfer case didn't sound right to me either. I know I added at least what came out of it so I will top it off again today along with the diff. I guess you can't overfill due to the position of the check/ fill plug. Thanks again for the help.
