Re: 1993 olds cutlass ciera s won't start and stalls Sign In

I replaced the ignition control module on my '93 olds cutlass ciera s this
morning. This after determing that I was intermittently losing spark. Up until now (6 months) this has been a totally random event. I determined that if I walked away from the vehicle and returned 20 min. to a half hour later that it would start right up. With the help of many of you I learned how to listen for the fuel pump to energize. Within the past 2 weeks vehicle started stalling while at highway speed and I would pull over - turn on flashers - and vehicle would restart. What prompted me to become more serious abouthtis is my wife and I broke down a couple of miles from home (vehicle stalled) and wouldn't restart. I abandoned the car and the following morning the car started right up. I brought it to my local repair shop where after 3 very busy days he only actually worked/watched it for about 3 hours. During that time he never got a computer code. I decided to take the car home for the w/e and try myself. As stated previously after eliminating 'lack of fuel' as the culprit I decided to change the ICM. Is it possible that the coil blocks (3) and or ignition wires could be bad? Is there anything else on this vehicle that controls spark to the plugs ie: computer?
After replacing ICM this morning the vehicle started right up. I drove it around town making sure that the engine was hot. I stopped to talk to my neighbor and shut it down. Immediately estarted it again uneventfully. After finishing a 3 minute chat w/ neighbor the car wouldn't start. It's been three hours and engine/sensors have had sufficient time to cool down. I've tried 4x to restart and no luck. Things appear to have gone from bad to worse. I'm into it for the $140.00 I spent for ICM. The coil blocks are about 24.00 a piece. If anyone thinks this might be the culprit I'll replace them and the ignition wires just to be safe. Any thoughts on this Gremlin (to quote my hero Tom) would be welcome. Thanks for reading and sharing.

Just an fyi. - 15 minutes after posting I walked back to car and it started. It had
been sitting about 2.5 hours. Crazy

(Edit by Tom) Moved just this part from now a long thread that was in general discussions. Any help here appreciated techs - thanks, Tom)

Yes. Thank you very much. I think your on to it. I'm not equipped to change that sensor. It's tucked in pretty tightly between the firewall and engine block. I'm going to bring it to my shop in the am and ask mechanic to change it. Did you see the link I posted showing a vehicle behaving the same way? It was fixed using your suggestion about crankshaft sensor. -Chris

Yes I did read the link. This may not be a guaranteed fix, b ut if you are losing all spark, the crank sensor is a logical place to go. It determines if the engione is turning so the computer can tell the ignition moduloe to gfo ahead ald start the spark process. Good luck with it.

I put vehicle into shop this am asking that they change the crank sensor.
Hypothetically - if problems persists - where would we try next? Vehicle computer? You know I've gone over ever detail of this in my mind - trying
to find a cause. In all my blogs I failed to say that the radio in the vehicle has a short - sometimes loses programming and you have to tap the face of it with your fingers to get it to work. Is there any chance this could be part of the problem? -Chris

Radio?? Has this forgotten all its presets? That might indicate a power loss to items more important than the radio!! For the moment just see how the new sensor works out and that the radio is a separate issue,

T

Thanks. I'm so sorry I didn't tell you abou the radio issue earlier. I just forgot. The radio has acted up since getting the vehicle. My brother gave it to me with 40k original miles last year. I drove it a good 20k before nostart/stall problem started. I'll let you know. Car is in shop today. -Chris
PS- Radio does lose it's presets when it messes up.
