Question about coil and gear inside Sign In

Hi

I was having a problem with my Cletrac OC3 tractor dying when hot (after 5 minutes or so) so I did changed the condensor inside the coil and the sparkplugs. I have now no start at all.. I did reconnect the spark plug wire to the right boot on the coil. I also have fire to the sparkplug. However I haven't put much attention to the gear inside the coil, to this gear :

Is it possible that the firing order is wrong now because of this, and this causing the tractor not to start ? If so, how can I "sync" this gear back ? The coil is a Wico XH1113.

Thanks.

Re: Question about coil and gear inside Sign In

We really don't get many tractors in here, but the gear or rotor you have your arrow pointed to should be pointing close to the number 1 terminal in the distributor cap with the number 1 cylinder at top dead center on the compression stroke. That should get the tractor running if everything is ok, so you can set the base ignition timing using a timing light.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Re: Question about coil and gear inside Sign In

Thanks for your reply.

If I understand right, I must place the piston #1 at his TDC and then place the rotor inside the coil poiting exactly to the #1 boot ?

I did found this to help me find the TDC of piston #1.

link deleted ......... not allowed

But how to know which piston is #1 ? It's a Cletrac OC-3 tractor. Do I need the engine model or it'll always be on the same position ?

Re: Question about coil and gear inside Sign In

Yes, it does have to be at TDC but specifically on TDC of the compression stroke. You need to hold your finger over the #1 spark plug hole and turn the engine by hand. As it comes up on TDC compression, you will feel pressure building on your finger. You can stick a coathanger or something like that in the cylinder to see when it's exactly at the top.

Thank you. If I understand right, the #1 piston is the one closest to the front of the engine ? The one closest to the belts ?

It should be but as DS told you, we have no info specific to that engine.

I'll look into all that and report back if I can get it to work. Thanks.

Just to let you know that I was able to start the bulldozer up with the procedure. Thanks a lot.
