Problem starting Mercury Sign In

I have an 2006 mercury, grand marque with 26000 miles. Sometimes when I try to start it in park I get nothing, it doesn't engage, I will put it in neutral and still nothing. After moving the lever back and forth and keep trying it will engage and start. This hadn't happened all of the time but lately it has happened 3 times in one week and the last time (today) it took 20 minutes before it started, sometime I wouldn't have the problem for a month or more. It's impossible to get diagnosed when it's working OK! I'm wondering if this could be a computer problem or where I might find the switch that engages to start it. I know on older models the switch was on the steering column but I can't seem to locate it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

I'm assume when you say "I get nothing" you mean the engine isn't cranking (spinning) over.

If that is the case get your battery load tested to make sure it's good and have the battery terminals & cables cleaned as well to see if that has any effect on the problem...

No, there is nothing wrong with my battery, it's new and everything is clean. When I say I get nothing, I mean exactly that! Everything else electrical works fine, lights, horn, radio, etc., etc....it is not engaging the switch that sends the signal to the starter to turn over. I would just like to know where I might find this switch or if it's something to do with the computer, which I doubt.

Re: Problem starting Mercury Sign In

As long as the battery is good with clean connections. The next thing you should look at is the trigger wire to the starter (the tiny gauge wire). Get a test light and when the key is turned to the start position it should light up, if not then that is where your problem is and that circuit would have to be checked out.

One quick trick you could try when it's not starting is to give the starter a rap with a hammer, if this gets it to crank then the odds are very high you have a bad starter....

Re: Problem starting Mercury Sign In

Thanks for the reply Sidom, I have a question! Is it possible that this little trigger wire would only act up once in a while as I've explained above? I take it that it must be the switch that I'm looking for. I know on the older models there was a switch on the steering column that would engage when you put the shift lever in park or neutral, and after extended use the points would get dirty and not engage all of the time. It's been a while since I've worked on cars and am not familiar with the latest innovations.
