Probably the ignition system? Sign In

If a car doesn't start sometimes, and most of the times when it does it has a hard time doing so, it could be the ignition system? It has a good battery, although the lights fade out when the car is trying to start. And it sometimes doesn't accelerate (as in you hit the gas but it struggles and doesn't accelerate).

It could be a dozen or more different causes. You would need to find out exactly what is changing when it happens.

I do know that you have to have a strong starting system to begin with. Some of these vehicles use VR position sensors which don't start producing a signal until the crank speed is high enough while cranking. Without the sensor information, the engine controller can't control the ignition or fuel injectors.

If the cranking speed is low from a bad battery, high resistance in the battery cables/connections, worn out starter motor, or a thick viscosity oil, you could have no starts or possible delayed starts.

Once you can rule out the starting system and you have good engine speed while cranking, then you can jump to other systems to check out.

What is the year, make, model, and engine size?

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
