Please Help No idea what to do

Please Help No idea what to do Sign In

I am new here and have a HUGE problem and idk what i am suppose to do. I have a 94 Jeep grand cherokee Limited 5.2 V8, all time 4 wheel drive. It has 202K miles on it. When i bought the vehicle there was absolutely no problems, this beast of a machine ran like a champ. 7 months later and yes this is the first time i had to have a repair done to it, i stalled out in advanced auto parking lot. My vehicle would not start back up. I had it towed to mechanic shop (maxi's) right down the road. Maxi's told me it was a crank sensor and it would cost me 230$ to fix. So i figured what the heck and told them to fix it. When i went to pick up my jeep, it sputtered, backfired and all around sounded like it was going to die. I went and complained and 10 minutes later they had it running almost like it was but it still felt a little off (they tried saying it was because i was low on gas? I went to the gas station and only paid 15$ to fill it up..(this was my first sign of they where hiding something) I hear this clicking noise now when i am in N, D, 1, 2 but when i am in park or reverse the noise is not there. (never had this problem before.) I asked them what they did to replace the crank sensor and 1 guy told me they had to pull out the engine ( but for 230$ this does not seem likely) Then one of the part owners told me they "BLINDLY" had to reach behind the motor to get the sensor off and replace it.. They looked a little nervous when i started asking questions and acting weird. When i tried to get them to look and see what the "clicking" ( sounds like a clock i guess too) sound was the guy basically laughed at me and told me to leave.

What i need from u guys is what is the possible clicking sound? can it cause harm if not fixed right away? What do i do about the guys i think intetionally broke Sh!t so i would have to come back? This just really sucks cause this jeep is my only ride, i am a college student my daughter is a special needs child so i have doctors appoints non stop through-out the month. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

The crank sensor is on the top of the bell housing and reads off the turning flywheel. It's a little hard to reach but you certainly aren't pulling the engine. This sensor would have to be removed as part of separating the engine anyway.

They may have bent the bracket that holds the sensor and it is not hitting the flywheel. It sounds like you landed on some idiots.

Your story on what they said indicates they are so full of bull from your side it's nuts. No way do you get a whole engine out and back in for $230 bucks AND if it did need tilting it for some reason (really don't have software on procedures for this job) to gain access it could be an exhaust leak.

Either or anyway this isn't right. #1 - giving you back a vehicle that doesn't run right wasn't my way of doing anything and long retired now.

From the sounds of it this should go to another shop for real diagnosis and or repair as you see fit. Could this make more damage? Can't say as I'm not there hearing it. If job was totally screwed up my bet any damage already done if and only if done all wrong......

As Ht mentioned the sensor is accessable from the top of motor . If your standing in front facing eng with hood up it's at 2 oclock position right where eng and trans meet . I sticks down towards flywheel and is set only a few thousands of an inch away fom the flywheel .Too far away and it does not work right ., too close and touches flywheel and makes noise ,. It is pretty staight forward procedure for a competent tech to set up. You appently have run into a nest of incompetent grease monkeys. I would cut my ties with them and ask another shop to readjust the sensor.

Sounds like they need to change their name for "Maxi's" to "Hackxi's".

Reading the procedure it looks like you have to remove the EGR feed pipe, valve, and oil pressure sender to get at the crank sensor.

They give you 1.4 to replace. Don't know what the shops diag time for troubleshooting was or or their labor rate.

If they did remove the transmission, which would be stupid, who knows what they would have left loose or screwed up in the process.

If you want recourse, you may have to get another shop involved to see if Hackxi's is negligent or not.

Of course we are hearing the OP's side, which is only half the story.

That is what I was thinking....... To me it looks like things went south in the parking lot on pick up.
Due to defective new parts or a misdiagnosis...Either way, what happened at the counter would determine the course this one was going to go.
If it was a cool headed "hey guys! What's up? my truck just died", then yea, another shop is probably in order.
If it was a total melt down at the counter with every accusation & threat flying then I could see, warranty the bad part & walk this guy....

I find it odd they wouldn't look at the other problem......

so get this i have a update for u guys. I went outside this morning getting ready to go get food and my jeep would not start. I was mad and then decided to go find the "sensor" they put in. I crawled underneath my car ( after youtubing where this thing was) and i could see the sensor but my arms are too big to reach it. I found a bolt under my jeep and as i looked around the sensor more found out the bracket was missing a bolt.. following that i called a few ppl to find out from there opinion, having that bolt missing caused vibration in the bracket which caused it to slightly graze the engine block i believe he said and probably cracked the sensor. The after i shut it off the jeep for the night the condensation from the wheather totally messed up the sensor and its probably bad again. This is a flippin nightmare and i appreciate everyone's input

If the sensor is loose and has moved, that alone can cause these problem. This sensor rides withing thousands of an inch of a spinning flywheel and the spacing is critical.

Wouldn't that be something if they didn't bolt the sensor down. The procedure has you removing the EGR tube. If the bolts are missing, you might want to give them a call. Don't know if the sensor head could be damaged from bouncing around on the flex plate.
