Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum so hopefully this is the right place for this post. I have an 89 Firebird with a 305 (5.0L) fuel injected. Recently my Dad and I changed the fuel filter and Water pump. As well as got rid of a T placed in the bottom rad hose for the heater hose to attach to and returned the hoses to how they would be normally. After that it was running fine... Until today. When I was moving it in the yard It stalled on me. After that it would not idle, just kept stalling. The car sat for an hour or two and now it won't start at all unless we poor gas directly down the throttle body. The fuel pump seems to be working fine and when the engine side of the fuel filter was undone there seemed to be a steady stream of fuel. Also the injectors are spitting fuel while it turns over. But the car has a hard time starting and if it will start it dies almost right away.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should T in a fuel pressure gauge at the fuel filter and see what the fuel pressure is doing. Need to know what the fuel pressure is while your cranking the engine.

this is a throttle body - 2 injectors visible in the throttle body AND they are spraying?
only spray when eng is cranking?

Colleague's suggestion of a fuel pressure test is a place to start-

Yes both pods are spraying fuel. If I pump the pedal I can keep the car going but as soon as I stop the car will die. I dont have a fuel pressure gage. We changed the fuel pods, put injector cleaner in the tank and replaced a damaged wire connected to the distributer. No luck there. I put a code reader on the car and it gave me the code. (Check engine light soon) Blink/ pause/ Blink/ Blink. Also known as code 12. But the book is confusing. It sais code 12 is a failure of signal from distributor to electronic control module. But it also sais something about code 12 meaning nothing

You need to know that pumping the gas pedal on a fuel injected car does nothing but exercise your foot.

Have you tried keeping it running by spraying some carb cleaner into the intake?

Need to know what the fuel pressure is. It might have just enough pressure to make it somewhat idle, but fall flat on its face when it needs more fuel volume.

Correct me if wrong please but code 12 means you have communicated with the computer - that's all and dunno how your methods work but repeats and if not on to another that ends that for diagnostics on that type. Move on to real testing,

code 12 - is all you get then the report is complete.
As it can run - poorly- confirms that code 12 is just proof of communication- all academic right now.

The throttle use to maintain engine running- I would look at -
1)You say both "pods" are spraying, when engine off key in run? or only spray when engine is running?

2)Your description has me thinking VACUUM leak - check the TBI base gasket and the EGR - be sure pintel is seated.

Thank you for all for replying. I'm aware that pushing the pedal on fuel injection just opens the butterfly. But it seems to keep the car from dying if I pump it the right way. It doesn't run smoothly and constantly wants to stall but I can keep it running for a few minutes like that. I havnt tried break cleaner but poring a bit of gas down the throttle body kept it running fine until that gas burnt up. If it was a vacuum leak wouldn't that have no difference? I'm not 100% sure but I believe the pods only spray when engine is on and cranking

OK, the gas test pretty much confirms you have a fuel supply problem. It can be plugged up injectors but it's much more likely a fuel pressure issue. You need to get an accurate reading on fuel pressure before going any further.

those POD's are the injectors... It is important to check that the spray as I asked- 2 people - you observe the injectors - other person moves key to RUN not start- are (injectors) leaking?

Again check for VACUUM leak - Ck that EGR - vacuum lines -
I will reread all the posts - were there any reoairs work prior to this issue?

Thanks everyone. We solved the problem. We were going to drop the tank but found out there was a hole under the carpet behind the rear seats that the previous owners cut to change the fuel pump. Discovered that whoever replaced the fuel used a zap strap to hold the line on the pump and the pump slipped off the line. We put it back on and secured it with a hose clamp and it's working great now

! OK - Seem you have found it and fixed it. That wouldn't be on a normal suspect list but should have showed up with testing that fuel issues were the problem then go find out why. I'll close out as solved. YOU can re-open upon request from any moderator,
