Please Help! Cadillac Catera

i have a 1997 Cadillac Catera, the engine blew on me and i have a 2000 Cadillac Catera engine that i was going to put in it, i was wondering if i would have any problems. the only difference i see is that the coil pack is on top of the spark plugs on the 2000, and not on the 1997 , would i have any problems switching those over?

Sure, you will have a problem. You have an operating system for a 97. You can't run the 2000 with that.

I believe there is a difference between the cylinder heads in those years. The part numbers are different. Don't know about the engine block if there are any differences, but your better off getting the correct year engine as the others stated.

that if i used the old heads and everything else off the old car and just used the block off the 2000?

Not really sure about that. Can't find a part number for just the short block to see if they are the same. The long blocks have different part numbers, so there is a difference.
If you have the engines at your house and removed from the vehicle, you could visually see if they are compatible. The important part is to make sure all the bolt holes in the block and heads are the same for all your components. Another thing I would verify is the trigger wheels from the crank and cam sensors are the same. The trigger wheel for the crank sensor may be machined onto the crankshaft. They could have changed the tooth positions or counts during the years. It won't run right or at all if the trigger wheels are different.

what if i just swaped the igniton systems? the the coil packs and stuff, i dotn really have much money is why im trying to figure something out

You going to have to swap the ignition system components and maybe some other components anyway. I honestly don't know if it will work or not. Like I typed above make sure all your bolt holes are the same and your trigger wheels for the crank and cam sensors are the same. I don't know anyone that has tried this swap, so you might be on your own finding out if it is going to work or not.

i looked at it today, it has the same crank sensor and it looks like i wont have a problem switching over the ignition, soo i guess im just going to try it and see how it goes

Don't lock this thread just yet.
Both engines for those years have the same RPO code. As long as everything electronic swaps over from the bad engine over to the good one, your bolt holes match, and cam and crank sensor trigger wheels are the same, it should run.
Don't swap the PCMs because there might be differences in the transmissions.

The cam covers are different because of the COP and I'm betting the heads are too.
